In the spring of 2008, our team implemented one of the largest Multi-Generational workforce surveys in British Columbia. It was a tremendous success, as we had over 1100 respondents from just about every industry you can imagine by the time we had wrapped it up. One of the questions we asked participants was, "What matters most to you in your relationship with the leader you report to?" They could choose from the following answers but had to indicate which ones were the most important:
The most popular choice was - "Is respectful" The second most popular choice was - "Treats people fairly" The third most popular choice was - "Is open and honest" Does this seem obvious to you? So my question is, how hard is it as a leader to be respectful, open and honest, and treat people fairly? By the way, these three traits are fundamental to the success of any relationship inside or outside of work. But again and again in the work that I do, I am still so surprised to discover that so many leaders today do not embrace these three traits. There is a plethora of leadership development opportunities out there. I would guess it is becoming close to a billion dollar a year industry. The list is endless when it come to leadership models that have been designed in the last fifty years to help leaders to be "better leaders". But really, in some ways, it seems so simple. "Try something for me will you". For the next five work days, with every person you meet be respectful with them, treat them fairly and finally, be open and honest.
