As a leader, how often have you found yourself banging your head against the wall because no matter how hard you try, the change you want to see is not happening? I am talking about any change, big or small - for the team, for the department or for the organization as a whole. So if your head is getting a bit too sore, remember this fundamental rule: Human beings will always resist change until the value of the resulting change is greater than the value of staying "status quo". It is our nature to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Leaders cannot ignore this simple biological rule, especially in the workplace. The Next time you are about to create change, ask your people if they can articulate specifically how your change initiative would have a positive impact on their job. Pending their responses, you might want to consider spending a bit more time upfront communicating the value of the change process. In the end, such communication will save you a lot of time and grief, and you might just find that banging your head against a wall is no longer necessary. - Shane Jensen, MA, CEC Questions, comments, insight? - Send me an email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
